The trip to Baratang and the Lime Stone Caves of the Jarawah's was the most exciting in our trip. The journey of the day commenced by 3.00a.m. By dawn we had reached Zirkatang Check point which divides the total distance equally. Entry into the Jarawah's Reserve Forest is restricted with a long list of dos and don'ts. We reached a place called Middle Strait where we had to alight and wait for ferry ship. The Middle Strait is a canal, roughly 100m wide, bordered by rich mangrove vegetation on either side, connects the sea both ends. Charted Outboard Motor Boats take the tourists in groups of six to eight persons, to a point roughly 12km south where one must alight and walk through the woody mangroves and then for a brief distance in the fields, in order to reach the Lime Stone Caves. We were frequently obstructed by intermittent spells of light shower. The visit to the cave was exciting. The cave that looks marble white under sunshine, turns black once it turns wet. Stalactite is the major substance whose accretion grows from above towards the floor. On return to Baratang, we waited for another trip to visit the Volcano site here.
