LOYOLA LECTURE 2016. Vareethiah Konstantine.

Memorable Moments. Recognition for Writing. Vareethiah Konstantine.

The Andamans memoirs. 2016. PART III: Junglighat Fishing harbour, Port Blair. Vareethiah Konstantine

The only of its kind in the Andaman Nochobar Islands, the Junglighat Fishing Harbour accommodates about 400 IBM Donghis of Andhra fishermen. These days only three mechanised  fishing vessels from Thoothoor were to be seen there, due to restrictions  and regulations including licence. The Coast Guard keeps strict vigil over the fishing activities within six kilometer limit, says Arul Seelan a fish merchant from Thoothoor.

The Andamans memoirs. 2016. PART II:The JARAWAH'S LIME STONE CAVES. Vareethiah Konstantine

The trip to Baratang and the Lime Stone Caves of the Jarawah's was the most exciting in our trip. The journey of the day commenced by 3.00a.m. By dawn we had reached Zirkatang Check point which divides the total distance equally. Entry into the Jarawah's Reserve Forest is restricted with a long list of dos and don'ts. We reached a place called Middle Strait where we had to alight and wait for ferry ship. The Middle Strait is a canal, roughly 100m wide, bordered by rich mangrove vegetation on either side, connects the sea both ends. Charted Outboard Motor Boats take the tourists in groups of six to eight persons, to a point roughly 12km south where one must alight and walk through the woody mangroves and then for a brief distance in the fields, in order to reach the Lime Stone Caves. We were frequently obstructed by intermittent spells of light shower. The visit to the cave was exciting. The cave that looks marble white under sunshine, turns black once it turns wet. Stalactite is the major substance whose accretion grows from above towards the floor. On return to Baratang, we waited for another trip to visit the Volcano site here.

The Andamans memoirs. 2016. PART I: HAVELOCK ISLAND.

My interest in a visit to the Andamans was prompted by a couple of points: watching the pristine marine ecology, and the close positioning of the forest and maritime landscapes. The dream became a reality in may 2016. Other than stop overs of historical and tourist interest, a few things attracted me about the Andaman islands were the Anthropological Museum of the Archaeological Survey of India at Port Blair, Lime stone Caves of the Jarawahs at Barathang and the Radhanagar Beach at Havelock Island.

TITLES BY VAREETHIAH KONSTANTINE.

My first writing happened in 1978 when I was graduating as an inmate of John Bosco Youth Centre, Nagercoil, a higher education programme of late Bishop Arockiasamy. We had launched a hand crafted house journal in which I had also served as editor. I had another spell of nine months and editor in a private circulation monthly 'Info' in Bangalore in 1984. In the mid ninties some clerics of Kottar had launched 'KaNiyam' monthly, and I had written some articles and a few verses (under the pen name Pallam Thirayan).
